Recently, the use of vitamin B supplements as a method of natural stress relief has gained high levels of attention. With the proliferation of many vitamin-enriched products such as water, herbal drinks and even certain breads and cereals, people are becoming aware of the need and importance for the inclusion of vitamins into their diet for many different health reasons. One of these reasons is our ever-increasing desire for a natural stress relief.

The vitamin B complex is particularly important for complete wellness. Vitamin B supplements support healthy nervous system function and fortify the body to make it more resilient during periods of overstress and occasional anxiety.

The vitamin B complex consists of eight water soluble vitamins, which are: thiamine (B1), riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), pyridoxine (B6), folic acid (B9), cobalomin (B12), pantothenic acid and biotin. The B vitamins work together to boost metabolism and enhance the immune and nervous system, which controls our stress response, and which in turn determines how we feel in the face of everyday stress. B vitamins also keep the skin and muscles healthy, encourage cell growth and division as well as many other health benefits.

As B vitamins are water soluble they are flushed out through the urine. Therefore, it is important to maintain your levels of water soluble vitamins on a daily basis. Although you can find B vitamins in many foods, e.g., eggs, fish, vegetables etc, for some people their diet may be lacking in sufficient quantities of vitamin B. Therefore the option of taking vitamin B supplements can be highly beneficial.

B-complex vitamin deficiencies occur far more easily than any other, particularly for people under stress. B-complex vitamins are commonly found together in foods and have similar functions to perform specific tasks, often needing each other to work successfully. This is why single B vitamin supplement is not often recommended. The vitamin B family is a useful group that targets some of the most common health issues, including lack of energy, stress, depression, brain and heart health.

It is believed that vitamin C also helps the B vitamins to perform at their best and so watch out for supplements that contain it as well.

Practically all B-complex vitamins are involved in treatment of stress and depression. The most important of these are B1,B3,B6,B9 and B12.

B9 (folic acid) is involved in the production of neurotransmitters, including serotonin and dopamine that regulate brain functions such as mood, sleep and appetite.

Folic acid deficiency is one of the most common deficiencies in the world. Diets low in vegetables and frequent use of prescription drugs contribute to this. Prolonged stress is also a risk factor. Lack of B9 causes mood disorders and low levels may play a role in depression, possibly due to a reduction in neurotransmitter levels.

Vitamin B9 has a direct effect on reducing depression and stress. It can help regulate sleep and appetite. It is crucial for proper brain function and plays an important role in mental and emotional health. Folic acid is the synthetic form of this vitamin found in supplements and fortified foods.

B12 is vital for normal brain function. The brain is the organ most dependent on B12. Those who suffer with a deficiency could suffer from forgetfulness. Vitamin B12 is one of the most important memory vitamins and one of the most important for stress.

It is clear that as more of us are seeking out a natural stress relief, B-complex vitamins could have a significant role to play in this.

While it is safe to take vitamin b supplements, each of us has unique requirements. Consequently, it is important to check with a professional before beginning a vitamin regimen in order to determine the correct dose and selecting the best product. Because deficiencies usually include more than one B vitamin, and because B-vitamins work best together, you should take a complex vitamin B supplement.

Taking a course of vitamin B supplements every day, either in tablet or capsule form, can be a good protection again stress and anxiety and may even help to reduce its severity.

The use of herbs for stress is becoming more and more popular. Herbal remedies have become readily available, from special teas to tablets and capsules. Coping with anxiety and stress can be a very daunting task and there are many different methods on how to overcome stress.

Many people are looking to natural anxiety remedies rather than conventional medicine for a wide variety of stress related symptoms. When it comes to reducing the effects of stress on the body, herbs are the perfect solution as they help to reduce stress related build ups of toxins, to calm an overactive mind and to help break down adrenaline as well as strengthen the heart and breathing system. All of which are under attack by ongoing stress.

Here I have chosen 5 common herbs for stress that can help reduce your levels: Siberian Ginseng, Ashwagandha, Rhodiola Rosea, Valerian Root and Chamomile.

These therapeutic herbs have been used for nearly 5,000 years. The Ancient Romans, Greeks, Egyptians and especially the Chinese have all used them for their healing properties. Today taking natural herbs for stress is an easy and often inexpensive way to overcome stress.

Siberian Ginseng is an especially useful herb in the treatment of stress. It can increase energy levels and diminish irritability. It can combat mental and physical fatigue, relieve depression and anxiety and increase resistance to stress by strengthening the nervous system.

Ashwagandha is a famed Indian herb used against stress for thousands of years. It is an adaptive herb that improves our ability to adapt to change and to productively react to external and internal stress factors. It is particularly useful if you suffer from fatigue. It increases energy levels and works as an anti-inflammatory. The anti-inflamatory properties of Ashwagandha are very important in times of stress, as excess stress can cause systemic inflammation.

Another of the important herbs for stress is Rhodiola Rosea. It also helps fight tiredness, which in turn improves memory and concentration. It also stimulates the immune system which helps fight off illness and disease.

One of the most common symptoms of stress is insomnia. Most of us prefer not to take prescription drugs for this, due to their sometimes adverse effects. Valerian Root can be of great benefit in the relief of insomnia. It soothes the nerves and has a sedating effect if used at bedtime.

And lastly, a common herb that can reduce your stress is Chamomile. This is one of the most popular herbs for stress due to it’s relaxing qualities. Taken as a cup of herbal tea, it is one of the most widely and easily used remedies to relieve anxiety. It is also sedating and promotes a good nights sleep.

The benefits of using natural herbal remedies to reduce your stress are numerous. They are generally safe, gentle, readily available and inexpensive. Most herbs for stress can be found in many different forms such as teas, tablets, capsules or liquids. They can all be found in your local health food store, supermarket or even online. But as with all remedies the best person to take advice from should be a health care professional, especially if you already have a pre-existing condition or are taking prescription drugs.

When the signs of stress are high enough, or prolonged, it can have very harmful effects on your health. One form of stress relief that people have turned to is stress relief balls, in particular, Chinese stress relief balls.

Chinese Stress Balls, or as they are sometimes referred to, Chinese exercise balls, Chinese health balls or Baoding balls are one of the legendary treasures of Baoding, China where they are referred to as ‘Miracle Balls’. They have been found in history since the Ming dynasty ruled China and when the handicrafts and other industries flourished under them. They are one of China’s most time-honoured products that have never ceased to claim all kinds of therapeutic relief to people around the world, and in particular for the relief of stress.

The Chinese Stress Balls come predominantly in the size of golf balls, but there are many different sizes to suit varying hand sizes. It is recommended that you start with a size that can be handled easily, and then work your way up to a larger size. The most common sizes range from a diameter of 1.25 to 2 inches.

They always come in pairs and are made of colored metal. Mostly in old traditional Chinese colors. Most of these Chinese Stress Balls emit a jingling sound when moved around. These stress relief balls are meant to be held in the palm simultaneously and rotated in clockwise and anti-clockwise directions alternatively.

The chiming can be used as an excellent enhancement for a deep meditation experience.

But just how can Chinese Balls reduce your stress? It seems too simple that these Chinese health balls can help relieve stress. Chinese Stress Relief Balls work in a very simple way. When the balls are rolled around and handled, it stimulates the various acupuncture points on the palms of the hand, that in turn passes healing effects onto various organs of the body that the acupuncture channels reach starting from the fingers through to the brain. This enhances a smooth energy flow through the body and is a very effective exercise when the signs of stress appear.

Chinese Stress Balls are believed to help reduce fatigue and worry, are claimed to prevent and reduce high blood pressure, and help with arthritis in the hands among other things. For some, the physical motion of using Chinese Stress Balls, helps release mental and emotional stress. Some may use visualization techniques to relieve stress when using the Chinese Stress Balls. They visualize the stress being transferred from their hands into the balls as they rotate them. As they become more proficient in the exercises, they also become better at their visualization technique, making stress relief more effective.

Chinese Stress Relief Balls are one specific way to reduce and relieve stress. They can be used in many different ways and each person who uses the balls can determine the best way for them to use them to their advantage. So for an inexpensive and convenient treatment for stress relief, using Chinese Stress Relief Balls could be the most beneficial exercise you have ever undertaken.

Panic attacks are symptoms of stress and anxiety. There are lots of people who suffer from panic attacks and are often given little or no information on ways of coping with them or treatment available. They all know the terrifying stages of an attack though.

Generally, the most common symptoms are dizziness, anxiety, body trembling, stress, heartbeat palpitations/racing heart, sweating etc. But coping with anxiety and finding ways to deal with panic attacks can be a daunting task.

An attack can be a very frightening and uncomfortable experience, but it is considered absolutely not dangerous. Panic disorder is not a mental illness but an anxiety disorder that many people share. Understanding what panic is, is very important. Studies and research tell us that panic is just an excess of adrenaline that runs through our bodies when confronted with frightening or life threatening situations.

It is basically a natural ‘fight or flight’ response designed to protect us. Unfortunately, for some people this natural response can be unpredictable and unexpected and often comes at an inconvenient time or place.

The need to know how to deal with panic attacks is essential for those who suffer from periods of overwhelming feelings of anxiety. Such episodes can be extremely unpleasant, but fortunately, most cases can be treated by implementing a few powerful methods.

The following are 3 effective tips for coping with panic attacks.

Firstly, implement the cognitive behavioral therapy technique. This is perhaps the most common and successful therapy. It works by gently exposing you to the place or event that is triggering such attacks. The best way to control panic attacks is by confronting them head on until you realize that the worst case scenario that you imagined is never likely to happen.

Secondly, learning to control feelings of fear and anxiety starts with a state of mind as to what you think can either worsen the attack or do away with it. Your anxiety levels will continue if you constantly anticipate failure or that something bad will happen. The power of positive thinking can prevail over destructive thoughts.

Thirdly, a simple way of coping with anxiety is regular exercise and a healthy diet. Exercise is not only beneficial for your health but exercise releases endorphins into your body which have been shown to reduce stress levels and anxiety disorders. It also keeps your mind distracted as you focus on another activity.

Making sure you have a healthy diet really helps when coping with and treating panic attacks. It is well worth reducing your caffeine and alcohol intake as these can act as a stimulant to increase the risk of an attack. Many people think that consuming alcohol help reduce your stress level and helps you relax. But this is far from the truth. It has been proved medically that alcohol makes panic attacks worse. The same applies to caffeine.

Dealing with anxiety is not impossible. If, as mentioned, you learn to face your fears or use distraction techniques you could take control of your stress levels and panic attacks. However, if these self help methods don’t work as well as you would like, your doctor may be able to offer other solutions. After ruling out a medical cause for the way you feel, your doctor may recommend trying some excellent antidepressant and anti-anxiety drugs available today. Alternatively your doctor may recommend counselling or psychotherapy and refer you to the right professional.

So don’t just suffer with anxiety, find a method that suits you and take control of not only your physical health but your mental well being as well.

Those of us who suffer from migraine headaches are forever looking for a cure. Unfortunately the cure for this miserable complaint has never really been found. Maybe this is because not everyone suffers migraines for the same reason.

When a migraine strikes though, whatever the cause, it’s an extremely painful, distressing and nauseous experience.

There can be many triggers which cause the headaches to start. It’s generally agreed that it can be anything from an allergy or allergies, to way of life, alcohol consumption, illness, and even not enough sleep.

There are various things that can be done to help to alleviate the symptoms. Your G.P. may prescribe medication which will help to reduce pain level, but remember some medications can in fact trigger a migraine in the first place so be careful.

Women, for instance, who take the birth control pill or H.R.T. sometimes find that this will cause them to suddenly have a migraine when they have never experienced one before.

Rest is one of the best ways to cope with a really bad migraine attack, and lying in a darkened room, trying to remain calm will definitely help.

Massaging with Lavender oil is another aid. With thumb and forefinger gently massage between the eyebrows, slowly moving your fingers up over the forehead, and gradually down to the outer edges of your eyes, and back behind the ears and down the neck. You must be very gentle when massaging as you don’t want to make the situation worse by rough handling.

Your diet may also play a part in your suffering, so it’s a good idea to ensure you’re on a diet of lots of fresh fruit and vegetables. Try to avoid processed foods, and fatty foods, as they will exacerbate your problem and wont do you much good generally.

Drinking water and fruit juices all help to keep your body in good working order, provided of course you’re not allergic to any type of fruit.

Allergies to certain pollens and grasses, and even a hot sunny day, can bring on a migraine, so try to pinpoint what you think might be causing the problem and eliminate it.

If you are a naturally anxious person, or are going through a particularly stressful time, try to counteract this with relaxation techniques such as yoga, dancing classes, painting and drawing, or even just lying down and practising deep breathing.

If you’re a migraine sufferer then you’ll undoubtedly have been to your G.P for medication. There are several medications available now and no doubt they do help to alleviate the symptoms of a migraine.

Unfortunately medication can also add to the sickness you may be experiencing and can make you unable to function at all. Added to that, if you’re allergic to aspirin say, there’s a limit as to what tablets are available,

Therefore it’s down to you to find a method of making the migraine more bearable so that you can carry on with your daily tasks.

At the onset of a migraine your natural instinct is to curl up in a ball and crawl into a hole. This is not necessarily a bad idea! However, this is often not possible and so in order to soldier on it’s a good idea to try to learn some techniques in relaxation.

The blood supply to the brain becomes restricted during a migraine attack and relaxing the muscles in the neck and shoulders will help to combat some of the restrictions and give a small amount of relief.

Anxiety, stress and anger all play a part in migraine attacks, and although it’s often difficult to control these emotions, in the long run it will be in your best interest to do so.

If you’re aware of what’s causing your migraine headache then it’s much easier to learn to control it.

Unbeknown to you, you may be allergic to certain foods or medication. Try to determine what they are by making a note each time you have a migraine attack by going over your diet for the last few days. It can sometimes be something you’ve consumed days before, so don’t only think of what you have just eaten.

Try to keep a diary of your foot intake, your activities, where you have been, what you have done, as this will give you some idea of what may have led up to the attack.

Once the migraine headache is under way aromatherapy can often help to alleviate the symptoms, so look into the possibility of having aromatherapy massage. Some people find lying in a darkened room with aromatherapy candles helps o alleviate the pain.

If your sinuses are blocked this could be the cause of your migraine so it’s a good idea to inhale hot water with a few drops of eucalyptus oil.

You have a migraine. You have a job. Now what do you do?

Deciding if you are able to go out when you have a migraine is a tough decision. You are in pain, you do not feel well, and more likely than not you are not thinking clearly. The ability to determine when you are okay to leave home when you have a migraine is a big part of learning to manage your condition. Here are a few things to take into consideration when deciding if you are in or out for the day.

How do you feel?

Yes, you have a migraine, but can you function? Only you know your personal headache pattern, is it likely to get better or worse from where it is now? What’s your mood? Are you sufficiently enthused about the day to be willing to function while in pain?

What did you take?

Stop and think about your pain relief for a minute. Did you take an over-the-counter remedy, or something a little stronger? If it was a prescription medication, go read the label and see what it says about driving and operating heavy machinery. If you aren’t supposed to do those things, it’s probably a good idea to hang out at home. This is not a hard and fast rule since only you know how you react to a medicine, particularly one you are familiar with. If you don’t think you’ll be impaired by your medications, great, but really think about it first.

Why?

Why are you going out? Basically, you have to decide how important it is that you go out. Work is important, but not if you have a job where potentially impaired function can be dangerous. Errands can always be run later. The class play? That might be worth it, if you can handle it.

Many migraineurs (people who suffer from migraine headaches) relieve the pain of a migraine with the judicious application of heat or cold. This type of pain abatement is particularly popular with people trying to minimize or avoid prescription medication use, especially among pediatric patients and their families.

Below are a few techniques that can help ease the pain of a migraine. Not all techniques work for all patients. While some migraineurs find comfort in cold, at least as many are more uncomfortable in the presence of cold. The same is true of heat used for pain relief—for some it helps, for others it makes the pain worse.

Apply a compress, hot or cold, to point on the head where pain is most severe. This is frequently on the temple where a large artery runs, or in front of the ear, another arterial locale.

For patients who feel their migraine pain “stabbing into the back of the eye” a damp cloth (warm or cool) laid over the eyes often provides relief. As a side benefit, covering the eyes in this manner also eases the discomfort of photosensitivity for many patients.

Taking a hot or cold shower with the water directed at the head and neck is another method to try, as is taking a warm (neither hot nor cold) bath. The latter is further enhanced with the use of appropriate aromatherapy techniques.

Some patients find relief in by alternating hot and cold cloths at the point where the migraine pain is most intense. Sometimes hot and cold used simultaneously can ease the pain. A migraineur may apply a cold compress on their forehead while at the same time soaking their feet in a container of warm water.

Rarely are patients simultaneously sensitive to both hot and cold, but it should be watched for.

Foods that cause headaches are called “triggers.” People who experience migraine headaches because of food sensitivities can eliminate their pain by simply eliminating the foods causing the pain.

However, it’s not always easy to discover which foods are the culprits. One way is to keep a food diary. Get a small notebook, with each page representing one day. On each daily page make three columns. The first column will contain the hours in the day. The second column will be a list of the foods eaten that day. And the third column will list the symptoms that you experience.

As an example, if you had eggs and toast for breakfast at 8 AM you would write “eggs and toast” in the food column that corresponds with 8 AM. Make a note of everything that is eaten on this list and at what time they were eaten.

When you eventually experience a migraine headache you write “migraine headache” or “headache” down in the symptoms column at the time it began. For example, if one of your headaches begins at 2 PM you will write “headache” in the symptoms column for 2 PM.

It may take a few weeks or even a few months, but after experiencing a few migraine headaches, with the help of the food diary, you will be able to tell which foods cause headaches. Over time, by figuring out which ingredients in these foods are causing your pain, you will be able to eliminate these ingredients and relieve some pain.

Another very common cause of tension headaches and migraine headaches is just plain stress. People who experience tension can get headaches from their increased tension.

Relieving tension can often relieve migraine headaches. Tension can be relieved in many ways such as with biofeedback training (as explained above), taking a warm bath or shower, lying down and resting in a quiet dark room, putting something cold on the back of the neck (at the base of the skull) or having someone massage your neck muscles and possibly your temporal region to help relieve your tension and muscle spasms. Regular exercise can also, over time, reduce tension.

These are just a few of the many natural treatment methods that are available to migraine headache patients. They are all considered safe and are effective for many people. If you have headaches it may be beneficial to try some of these treatments or search out others on your own. But as always it is a good idea to talk with your doctor before attempting to treat yourself for a health problem.

Natural treatment methods for migraine headaches are usually harmless and also cheaper than traditional pain medications. Sure, it’s possible you could experience a negative reaction or even increase your headache pain because of a natural treatment, but the odds are far less than with pain-relieving medications. A real migraine relief alternative is needed in particular for those who have allergies to medication.

People are different from each other. A natural treatment that might relieve one person’s migraine headaches may not relieve someone else’s. But on the same measure, just because one migraine headache treatment does not work for one person does not mean it won’t work for you. There are many effective alternatives to taking medication when it comes to relieving migraine headaches. One of these alternative methods may be just what you have been looking for.

Chiropractic adjustments, or chiropractic manipulations, are a very popular natural treatment method for headache relief. Patients with migraine headaches have been visiting chiropractors for over 100 years, and with very good results. Studies have shown that over 80% of headache patients find relief with chiropractic care. Plus, chiropractic treatment has been shown to be extremely safe. Spinal problems do cause headaches and by correcting these spinal problems many headache sufferers find welcome relief.

Biofeedback is another form of treatment that is safe and can be effective in eliminating pain. Biofeedback is a training program designed to help a person develop the ability to control their autonomic (involuntary) nervous system. Functions that are normally automatic can be controlled voluntarily. This technique makes it possible for a person to control their own heart rate, blood pressure, skin temperature, and of course, the relaxation of their tense muscles.

Stress can cause tension, which can lead to muscle tightness (muscle tension) and cause headaches. By relaxing these tense muscles, especially in the neck, it is possible to relieve the tension causing the migraine headaches. With biofeedback, once the technique is learned there is no longer any need for the biofeedback equipment. The patient with migraine headaches can now produce the desired effect at any. They can control certain bodily functions, such as muscle relaxation, which can help reduce and relieve their migraine headaches.

Most people are unaware that too much salt can cause headaches. And by simply lessening the salt intake headaches can sometimes be prevented.

Food allergies or sensitivities can also cause migraine headaches. Certain foods such as cheese, alcohol, monosodium glutamate (a food additive), nuts, beans, caffeine, chocolate and onions can cause migraines.
